Sunday Mailbag- Missed MAD Spoofs?

July 19th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Sunday Mailbag!

Q: Is there any movie/TV show you wanted to draw a spoof of, but never did?

A: Sure, many of them. As for recent movies I’d have loved to do a spoof of “Captian Phillips (Captain F’s Up)”, “Dallas Buyer’s Club (Dullest Buyers Clubbed)”, “Birdman (Birdbrained)”, “Argo (ARRRRRGH-O)”, or “American Hustle (American’s… Hustled)”, among others. Possible spoof titles all mine… I missed me calling. For TV shows I’m still hoping I get to do “Sherlock”, “The Blacklist”, “Arrow” or “The Flash”, “Penny Dreadful” (“Really Dreadful”… see, MAD! I’ve already written the title for you!), “Doctor Who” and “Person of Interest”. Those are all just off the top of my head.

I halfheartedly lobbied for the “Lord of the Rings” movies but those jobs went to the insanely talented Hermann Mejia (rightly so). I would have loved to do them. I always thought we should have done the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, but they got passed up. Many of my all time favorite TV shows I did get to do, like “Mad Men”, “Lost”, “Orange is the New Black”, Breaking Bad”, “True Detective” and “House of Cards”.

With only 6 issues a year the opportunities are fewer and the timing more difficult, so many TV shows and films that would have certainly gotten the MAD treatment in past years are not being spoofed these days.

Thanks to Harry Thornton for the question. If you have a question you want answered for the mailbag about cartooning, illustration, MAD Magazine, caricature or similar, e-mail me and I’ll try and answer it here!

Comments

  1. Is it just the unfortunate realities of print press in 2015 why there’s only 6 a year or do you think it’ll ever increase again?

  2. Michael McCauley says:

I know the British MAD did a spoof of the classic Doctor Who (Doctor Ooh) but I’d love to see a spoof of the new series, as well as Sherlock (Sure Luck) and Gotham (Got Them (by the B*lls)

  3. james Thomas says:

Has Mad spoofed “The Walking Dead” ?

    • Tom Richmond says:

Yes. Not sure of the issue number but they did it back in season 2 I think. Hermann Mejia did the art.

  4. Penny Dreadful would totally be “Pretty Dreadful”

  5. Jack Myhervold says:

You came up with good spoof titles. I want to be on record before Mad gets to it, of calling the next Bond film spoof – “Sphincter”. I hope they do get to The Blacklist, and I would have enjoyed a Hannibal spoof with all the jokes about the excess violence, the ridiculous dream/crazed imagery, and how they could miss the obvious clues as to Hannibal’s involvement for so long. They could have him doing a cannibalistic Julia Child type cooking show. 6 pages of Mads Mikkelsen, who is caricature gold as you know.

  6. Art says:

You are so correct for expecting the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise to have come under the satirical eye of MAD. That, along with “Avatar,” were two big surprise misses (although, I do expect MAD to redeem itself once the “Avatar” sequels get released, much like it did with the “The Toilet Saga” satire). And just to get in my creative two cents, I’d always wanted a spoof of “The Social Network” renamed as “The Anti-Social Nerd’s Work.”
