Sketch o’the Week- Firefly!

This is a little different than usual, but here’s a drawing I was commissioned to do at the Chicago Comic-Con this past weekend. Sorry for the lousy picture, I took it when the drawing was in a plastic holder, and it’s a little warped looking. Anyway, It’s the cast of “Firefly” with the couple who commissioned it added in on the right.
Apparently one of the things you are expected to do when you have a booth at a comic-con are commissions for people. My buddy, comic book superstar Tom Nguyen, did a ton of them all weekend long. I prefer to do the fast caricatures of people because they are over and done when the subjects are sitting there, and I don’t end up with a bunch of drawings I have to catch up on. This one was for the gentlemen with the table right next to me, done as a present for his wife on their anniversary or her birthday (can’t remember which). That was a special arrangement. It was fun to do but did take some time.

have magazines or catalog where teach this kind of cartoons?
I’m a huge fan of you and Firefly! How might I snag/purchase a copy sans couple (of course)??
So you did the whole Firefly crew plus the two civilians from scratch at the con? Impressive, if for nothing other than the research and concentration while the whirl of con-life spun around you! You know, you could do up a colored print of that crew and offer them just as you did with the Dr.s and the Bonds. Why stop there – do all the Star Trek crews, Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1. The media-fan’s wallet is your oyster!
Thanks but doing something like this in that sort of environment only turns out so good. I had to wing it and there are many mismatched proportions, iffy likenesses and general awkwardness in the composition. The two best caricatures are of the civilians.
Not sure I want to go down the road of producing caricature prints of multiple TV show and film properties. So far my theme has been caricaturing different actors playing the same role, and making visual commentary on the differences they brought to the role in question. That plus the inherent satirical nature of caricature gives me a first amendment angle on these prints… doing the whole cast of a single show…?
Firefly was popular enough to demand a movie. Might be a good exception to the rule. I’m betting you’d have a huge fan base to sell to.
