Sketch o’the Week

February 27th, 2013 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Due to popular request, this week I’m posting three recent caricatures from my quickly dwindling number of available Limited Artist’s Editions of my book, The Mad Art of Caricature, complete with observations from the references I worked from:

Sam here has a very wide head shape, accentuated by the close, flat lying hair on top but bushy, round hair on the sides. Those are some great shapes to work with, especially the way his bangs hang down from the strong part in his hair.

Jose has a big grin…the sides of his lower face extend and come to pretty sharp angles at the jawline. To exaggerate the wide lower face, I narrow the forehead/cranial mass. prominent, wide nose as well.

Teukku here has a face with lots of sharp angles. I could have exaggerated the egg-oval shape and small eyes, but instead went for the strong, masculine jawline. Note his eyes are off angled to the centerline of his face. Wide nose bridge, deep mouth corners and strong cheekbones.

There are still some of my Limited Edition Prints available, but they are going… going…

  1. MMG says:

Are your finished pieces all immaculate conceptions or do you do any prior exploratory sketching

    • Tom says:

I do a simple head shape/T-Shape rough study with a dark pencil that I can just barely see through the page, place it underneath as an “underdrawing” and then go in with the markers.

  2. MMG says:

Humm! very intewesting me mucho likey

  3. How does Sam keep his glasses on without
the over the ear stems? Pretty cleva fella.
