Holy Veeblefetzer, Batboy! This gigantic 22″x 15″ coffee table book,¬¨‚ĆTales Calculated to Drive You MAD: Artist’s Edition is an absolute level 11- I GOTTA HAVE IT on a scale of 1-10 on the “Stuff Tom Wants” meter. I had no idea this was on the horizon, or I would have pre-ordered it long ago.
The book features “nearly 20 incredible stories and a dozen classic covers” with at least one thing representing every issue of MAD from #1 to #18.¬¨‚Ć That sort of thing has been done many times, but this edition is unique because the art within is scanned from the actual original art and printed same-size as drawn! These are not just enlargements but the actual original art pages, complete with stray pencil lines, white out, margins, mark-ups, paste-ups and other production elements. That means you get to see, up close and personal, the pages as they were delivered into the hands of Harvey Kurtzman by the likes of Wally Wood, Bill Elder, Jack Davis, and Basil Wolverton. I am so ordering this. You can get it here or via Amazon here. There is a better price from one of the resellers at Amazon but the shipping is almost a month out.
One sad note is that, so far as I can tell having not seen the entire book, the only artist who’s work is featured in it and who is still walking the earth is Jack Davis. No chance to get it signed by the rest of them, unless Houdini was wrong.

Thanks for the heads-up. I remember going to a show of a bunch of original Kurtzman work (I think they had Elder and Davis there too) in SF years ago. It was AWESOME to see the thick layers of whiteout and other stuff. Mind Blowing
That does look like something worth getting. Among other cartoon book’s that also have good rough drawings are, the 2 volumes of Little Annie Fanny, with Kurtzman, Elder, and sometimes Davis. And I’m sure you already have the Wallace Wood – “Woodwork” book. When I imagine casting of Wood in a bio-pic, based on just a few pictures I have seen, I’m thinking of Joseph Gordon Levitt, Neil Patrick Harris, Matt Damon, and the late Heath Ledger would have done a great job. Tom Hanks with lightened hair would be good in the last year’s, but might be less convincing in the younger year’s now. And that takes care of my frustrated casting director issue’s for today!.
Wally Wood could have been a movie actor. Anyway, he left us with a head shot. Hiiiii-yo!!!!

LIVE!, from the GRASSY KNOLL!, its BANG MARGERA!. I haven’t read all the Woodwork book, so I don’t know if they talk about it, but he and his wife tried recording folk tunes. I came upon this at – Super I.T.C.H. blog archive. You might be able to find the audio clip I heard at – D.J. David B. spins comics-tunes:Wally Wood. There is, (or maybe was), a seven song cd called “Wally Wood Sings”. Or at least his wife can.
