One More Plea for MAD Documentary Funding!

February 5th, 2013 | Posted in MAD Magazine

It is crunch time for the Kickstarter campaign to fund this sure-to-be-great documentary about MAD Magazine, and thanks to many supporters it’s within reach. There are only four days to go, and they are a little less than $8,000 short of their $50,000 goal. That’s close, but even if they reach $49,999.99, they need the full $50,000 if they are going to get a dime. That’s how Kickstarter works…if you don’t reach the goal, you get nothing.

They have been stepping up their rewards for support levels. For example, now for $25 you get a physical DVD of the documentary and not just a digital download. Look at their updates for the new rewards, since they can’t seem to update them on the front page itself.

I mentioned before, I am doing the movie poster for this. I’ll do it in the same manner I do my work for MAD, meaning inked original and digital color. Just to give you an idea of what we’ve got in mind, picture the great movie poster for “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” by Jack Davis…this will be a bit of an homage to that but with even more of a MAD flair… and of course drawn by a vastly less talented artist.

I’m helping out by also stepping up my contributions to the rewards levels:

  • If you are a $50 or more backer, you will get a signed copy of the mini-poster. I will sign as many as we give away to backers, even if it gives me carpal tunnel.
  • Although I will be doing the actual movie poster art color digitally like I do my MAD work, I am offering to hand paint the original inked artwork to match (as close as I can get, anyway) and give that to one sucker backer at a one-only $2500 level. Yep, you get the original, hand-painted movie poster art. I’ll even sign it. I’ll even sign my real name, although if I signed it “Sergio Aragon?¬©s” it would be worth a lot more.

If you’ve already pledged some dough, consider moving up to get that signed mini-poster, or my original artwork. Pass this along to other people and see if we can get this done. The documentary is already a long way towards getting done . . . this is not one of those “I’ve got an idea and I’ll get around to doing it eventually if you give me money” Kickstarter drives. Alan has already got hundreds of hours of interviews with great MAD artists, writers and editors. This will allow them to finish the job and produce a great film telling the story of one of the most influential publications of all time.

I just sent an email to about 100 people who MIGHT be interested in sending in a few dollars and I also increased my donation since they’re so close. It wouldn’t hurt for everyone who did contribute to pick and choose those friends who might also and send them a request with the website.

Thanks, David! I also am encouraging people to up their donation (I did), especially if they are at less than $50. I don;t know if my original art (sight unseen at this point) will get that $2500 pledge, but it’s worth a try. It is going to be a pretty detailed and “dense” poster.

    David,
All you guys working behind the scenes for us are making our heads spin in a good way. Exhausting to keep up with all the good will.
    Can’t thank you enough!
