Sketch o’the Week

And now for something completely different . . . a dog. It is quite possible to caricature animals. In fact, animals have a lot of personality and expression which can be a lot of fun to capture. You need only look at some of the great Disney and other studio’s animation of animal characters to see that. The first sketch is a fairly straight drawing of a miniature pincher, with just a little bit of exaggeration. The second exaggerates a lot more.

I’m glad you showed this sketch. I have wondered how you would do an animal.
I am working on a drawing of my wife’s Pomeranian, and thought about doing it as a caricature. He is ten years old and has asthma, so I would need to draw him barfing on the floor at my feet!!
    Thanks for your sketch.

  2. Robin Crowley says:

You may surf my Randy & Nelson album for reference photos 🙂

  3. I like it so much! For me, it’s diffcult to draw animals well, but I think this one is fantastic.

  4. Alex Chicot says:

Actually, the second one seems more realistic to me…

  5. jailerjoe says:

Those eyes! I’d share a bite of my sandwich with the lil’ guy. Nice, Tom.

  6. Jon Herman says:

Great sketches! I agree with Alex; the second one is more what I see when viewing a little dog. Many dog breeds already ARE caricatures!
