Praise for “The Mad Art of Caricature”

October 27th, 2011 | Posted in News

Anyone who got a copy my book The Mad Art of Caricature found a little insert asking that, if they liked it, to spread the work by mentioning it on Facebook, on their blog or on an appropriate message board forum. Some people really went above and beyond, and posted glowing reviews of the book on their blogs. Here’s a sampling (click on the name to go to the full review):

Krishna Sadasivam (cartoonist- PC Weenies)
“…I have read a LOT of drawing / cartooning / illustration books over the years, and I must say that Tom’s book is right up there with the best of them…¬¨‚Ć This book is a goldmine for cartoonists and illustrators.”

Howard Tayler- (cartoonist- Shylock Mercenary)
“…One 30-minute pass through the book tells me that this is going to be my go-to reference work for cartoon faces for years to come… I haven’t learned as much in a speed-read since I skimmed Andrew Loomis’ Figure Drawing for All It’s Worth. That book and this one will now share a shelf next to my drawing table.”

Terry Dunnett- (caricaturist and illustrator)
“…This is not one of those coffee table ‘look what I can do’ books. It is a 170 page comprehensive guide to the art of caricature that is destined to become a ‘must have’ for caricaturists world wide… If you only ever buy one caricature book – make this the one.”

Don Mertz- (caricature wood carver)
“…The book is well illustrated with Tom’s original art work as well as his scholarly written descriptions and how to illustrations. ¬¨‚ĆWhether one draws caricatures or carves caricatures this is a most valuable book to study and be inspired into the MAD world of caricature…”

Kenny Durkin (caricaturist)
“This is not only the most informative book of caricature I’ve ever seen, but the best instructional art book PERIOD.”

Anton Emdin (Cartoonist and illustrator)
“…I would take a punt that The Mad Art of Caricature will become the modern caricaturists’ bible; a valuable asset to amateurs and pros alike.”

Keelan Parham (Cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist)
“…It (the book) is truly amazing, in the quality of artwork, the quality of writing, and the sheer amount of knowledge of it’s subject imparted in it’s pages. Without a doubt, it’s¬¨‚ĆTHE definitive guide to drawing caricatures.”

Ed Steckley (Cartoonist, Illustrator and caricaturist)
“…it’s amazing how much knowledge and experience is packed into those pages. ¬¨‚ĆI know for a fact it’ll get multiple reads around my house, not just as a refresher on caricature, but for inspiration.”

Full disclosure, those last two are good friends of mine. I’ve gotten dozens of emails also praising the book. My thanks to everyone who has ordered a copy… I am glad you are pleased with your purchase.

For those who have not ordered one yet… what are you waiting for???

Hi Tom, I just got mine today (I live in Argentina) and it’s really great, Thank you very much !!!

  2. Lee Fortuna says:

Tom, I feel bad I have not ordered your book yet, but I have no desire in drawing caricatures anymore & would like to concentrate on cartooning. All for personal use, not professionally. Is there a good deal of “cartooning help” your book can offer me? I sure hope so! Is there any cartoonist with a testimonial regarding the value to a cartoonist your book offers? Thanks!

  3. Krishna says:

Lee, the techniques Tom has in his book are totally applicable to cartooning. I am a cartoonist and I stand by my testimonial. It’s a GREAT book.

    • Lee Fortuna says:

Thanks Krishna! Not only will I take your advise & buy Tom’s book, but I am a new “PC Weenies” Fan! Love your website as well Krishna! Tom, send a sketch to Krishna of Pastis all bundled up in Minn with the hot sun over his shoulder for the great advise he gave me on the value of “The Mad Art Of Caricature” book! Thanks guys!

  4. George Cook says:

I have not yet had the funds to order a copy of the book, but I will be doing so as soon as I can!!

  5. RESTREPO says:

Nunca dejamos de aprender. Este es un gran libro para seguir aprendiendo.
We never stop learning. This is a great book to continue learning.

  6. Brian Benson says:

I was only interested in caricatures because of Mad magazine. I would only buy a copy if Mort, Jack or Tom had drawings in it. I always wish i knew how they could get such a good likeness and still be a cartoon or caricature. I love this book. It totally explains exactly what to look for when evaluating a face to caricature. Almost like a check list or sequence, to get a likeness almost every time. Head shape, eye tilt. the law of consistent mass… I can now look a a face and almost instantly see what rules apply. I really like the section on live caricature. I think the only way to get better than this book is to have Tom personally train you at one of his booths. This book is way under priced. Lucky for me I have my copy. Thanks

  7. Thanks again, Tom, for a bloody marvellous guide to all things caricature! It acts both as a memory jogger, practice pusher and trainer for many techniques I’ve never even considered. If you’re not careful, this could become the eternal caricaturist’s bible for years to come…or until lunchtime at least. It’s also an amazing portfolio for yourself – stunning work as always. Love to you and your family. Best wishes, Rich S.
