In honor of my Minnesota Twins clinching the American League Central Division championship last night, this week’s sketch is of one of the main reasons why they were able to do it. Slugger Jim Thome was long coveted by the Twins even as he spent most of his career playing for other teams in our division, but they eventually signed him and he’s been a godsend. 25 home runs in a part time DH role while bringing great leadership and enthusiasm as well as total class into the clubhouse. Congrats Thome and the Twins!

Ugh. I’m a White Sox fan. Why the heck they let him go…..
Actually I can understand their reasoning. They needed either a permanent everyday DH or more flexibility from their DH, meaning someone who could also play in the field somewhere and allow for others to get days off and DH. Thome could not go everyday, his back would never have held up. It just happens that the twins needed a part time DH who wouldn’t mind having only 300 or so at bats for a season, and Thome was there for the taking. It worked out great for the Twins and would have for the Sox, but Mark Kotsay ended up being a bad choice for that flexible DH.
