Drawing Down Under

Cartoonist and Australian Cartoonist Association member Lee Shepard recently uploaded this video of me doing a quick caricature demo at the 2009 Stanley Awards weekend in Sydney, where I was one of several presenters. Unfortunately Lee was sitting with my substantial bulk between his camera and the paper, so you can’t see me drawing much except when I am kneeling down or when I move aside. Sorry about that, Lee. This segment took place after I gave a boring hour long lecture on caricature and the audience was drawing the same faces on the screen as I was during the demo.

Two things about this video: First, the first subject we are drawing is amazing cartoonist and caricaturist Jason Chatfield. Second,¬¨‚ĆI have lost over 30 pounds since I got back from Australia and that gigantic gut you see here is long gone…. hopefully never to return if I can lay off the beer and bratwurst this summer.

Finally! The truth comes out, doesn’t it Tom? I have often wondered how your caricatures turn out so phenomenal. Is it due to experience? Is it hours of study and practice? Were you just born with raw talent? Nope. None of the above. It’s the “Superman” t-shirt, isn’t it? I KNEW there’s a secret weapon involved!

In all seriousness, though, thanks for the sharing the video. It‚Äö√Ñ√¥s extremely helpful and enlightening. It has also reminded me to keep things simple — as I have a dreadful habit of getting bogged down by details when I‚Äö√Ñ√≤m drawing live caricatures. Thanks so much!

Yep, you’re right, I guess you threw that spare tire out before the road trip down here. Good thing you can always look forward to a healthy, low calorie meal at the All-Stars when you visit.
