Sketch o’the Week

March 17th, 2010 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

This week we continue our Sketch o’the Week ink wash caricature series countdown to the May 23rd finale of “LOST” with the fetching Evangeline Lilly AKA Kate Austen. Each week I am planning on doing one of these ink wash studies of one of the major LOST characters. That means nine more until the finale… or until I get bored with it. I’ll try and stay focused.

Incredible, Tom!! Ink wash – something I can’t even fathom doing. I think this may be my favorite piece of yours now (and not just because it’s beautiful Miss Lilly). The freckles and teeth are spot-on. And I love the reflecting light. Please, DON’T get bored with these! 🙂

  2. Stan says:

Love it!!!! You should color underneath these.

  3. Mike says:

I really like your ink washes. I can’t wait to see more.

  4. Sam says:

WOW! Brilliant!!! I absolutley love this piece! I think your style of caricature looks great in watercolor. Can’t wait to see the other nine sketches! you are a constant source of inpiration for all of us. Thank you

  5. Heidi P. says:

Wow, I love it! One of my favorite shows, too. Can’t wait to see what you do with the other characters!

  6. zwallenfang says:

Very cool. If you don’t get bored doing these, I look forward to seeing who else you do. Frank Lapidus would be a good one. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone draw him (not that you’re taking requests or anything).

  7. Jon says:

    Awesome.

  8. Love her eyes and nose!
    Beautifully done my friend!

  9. Nice style, not so cartoony. Great likeness.

  10. Beast says:

    Really nice Tom.
Is this completely new or loosely based off a previous sketch. You did the LOST parody in Mad right?
I was just wondering: If it’s from a completely new sketch-did you make different exaggeration choices this time or are they similar to previous decisions from the last drawings and just build on them.

    • Tom says:

Nope, I did this one from entirely different references without looking back at the ones I did for the MAD parody. I wanted a fresh take. I used three different pictures, none of which are the same as this drawing. I combined elements to make this caricature.

  11. julio cesar naranjo says:

Hi Tom amazing as always i like very much this technique that your using hopefully you can do other characters from time to time. Take care.

  12. Absolutely beautiful work Tom. Brilliant!

  13. Kelson says:

These ink wash sketches are awesome! Would it be possible to see some process pics and information on your technique? How large is the original? Since this is just a sketch, do you still start with pencil, or straight away with a brush? As always, really great work, Thank you for taking the time to post these!

    • Tom says:

I could scan the work at various stages I suppose. I do a light pencil sketch first and then apply the washes on top.

  14. Tom says:

Thanks for the kind words, everybody.

  15. Matt Mattson says:

I have to say that this style is one of my favorites that I’ve seen you do! BAVISSIMO!

  16. Sagan Lacy says:

I am very impressed with these, Tom. I eagerly anticipate the final collection, just as I eagerly anticipate the series finale!
