Sketch o’the Week
Here’s another “cold” sketch where I was completely unfamiliar with the subject. When you attempt a drawing like that you are entirely dependent on that one photo reference to provide all the information for your drawing. That makes it superficial and often causes it to lack life and/or the kind of strong likeness and personality you can get by drawing someone who’s features and mannerisms you are more familiar with. This is Oscar nominated actress Amy Adams from the movie “Doubt”. I should be more familiar with her as she is a hometown girl from Minneapolis. I thought she had an interesting nose and fun hair to draw. The Lovely Anna was quick to tell me that the photo I used didn’t look much like Amy Adams, so I am guessing neither does this caricature.

Go out and get a copy of “Enchanted” (I suspect your daughter will love it). It’s a charming, very entertaining parody of the whole Disney princess romance, done as a Disney princess romance. It’s the best film Disney has done in years (even the grownups in our household like it).
Anyway, Amy Adams is in that, and she’s fantastic in the lead role. So there you go, eh? Movie advice from a total stranger. 😉
Thanks for the suggestion. My kids have seen that and we actually own a DVD of it I think. I will have to find time to watch it.

Wow, I never realized she was in “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” That movie’s more Minnesotan than “Fargo!”
Great sketch, Tom. I recall that photo from Entertainment Weekly’s Oscar nominees spread because I thought it was a flattering angle. It reminded me of the reason a buddy of mine did not care for the artwork of silver age great ( and one of my faves) Gil Kane: the upward face shot into the nostrils. Still, she’s a gorgeous lady. I hope she’ll return to the US version of the Office as the handbag selling lady. Love the hair on the drawing!
I love the drawing Tom. Nice hair. I know what you mean about not being familiar with your subject. Finding that a little troubling doing the politicians thing.

First time poster long time reader 🙂 Love your posts and insight and bla bla bla. Oh, and your work is ok. Ha! No, love it! This is probably one of my fave sketches. I love the others (Jack Black is a close second), but I am not sure if it’s the pose you chose or what, but there is something about it.
So, do you take requests? There is another interesting “face” that would be interesting for you to do (hardly a challenge 😛 but if you don’t know the subject, who knows!) It’s Annie Wersching who plays Agent Renee Walker on the show 24. Something about her eyes and facial features is fascinating… anyway, just a thought. Love your work and blogs.
Thanks for commenting, Dave. I will be on the lookout for references on Annie Wersching for a possible future SotW, but usually these are spontaneous drawings done just paging through handy magazines, so I do not promise anything.
Tom! I saw this picture and knew exactly who it was, in fact i am currently flipping through the entertainment weekly it came from, the picture doesn’t really do her justice, so the caricature follow suit so to speak, but compared they are dead on, but she is a beaut, very funny in Enchanted, great job Tom!
I recently asked my students (cartoon art course) how many of them felt that photos of them actually look like them. Zero. Live is best, video is second, multiple candids a weak third. Your wonderful style is so interesting that you (and maybe, Mort Drucker too) can forfeit a bit of likeness, IMHO.
