Batman: The Dark Knight Trailer
I took a short break on Friday to catch a matinee of “I Am Legend” (see my review next week sometime) and to also see the rumored full teaser trailer for the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight” due in theaters this summer.
My reaction to the trailer? I can’t tell one way or the other about this movie. Heath Ledger‘s Joker looks like a 60 year old prostitute, but he might be brilliant or he might be ludicrous… you get no real information or feel for the film from this trailer. No clues to the story, and you barely see Christian Bale or Batman at all. In other words, the jury is still out.
In the meantime, here’s a little cartoon I did a few years back when “Batman Begins” was about to come out. I’m still of the same opinion, although I liked “Batman Begins” better than the other live action Bat-flicks.

Now that I’ve seen “Batman Begins” I’d give that movie a solid B, bordering on a B+. Origin movies are a little easier to do as you need not worry about the superhero as a character until halfway through the film. It’s the second movie where you have to get started with the real story that is the trickier film to pull off. We shall see….

Personally? I think they’re killing the Batman movie franchise by making it too edgy and dark. This new Joker character that Heath Ledger personifies is a major turn off. I don’t understand why the owners of the Batman rights would agree to see their crown jewel of super heroes be destroyed with such hideous representation.
Spiderman at least “flirted” with the dark treatment and had Spidey comeback to his original self. Stan Lee would never allow his most successful creation turn into the garbage this Batman franchise allowed it to be lately.

Based on it, yes. The legs are different and there are some changes to the upper body as well, but that was the reference I used.
Great work Tom. I’ve enjoyed your blog and work for some time now. I agree with your assessment of the Bat-films. Mask of the Phantasm is the best by far. Probably the only one not directly trying to sell action figures for, coincidence? I will say I enjoyed Keaton in the role besides the looks not being close to the comics. He played it straighter than the others though Bale is playing the heck out of the role too.
Batman Begins was pretty good and I look forward to the next installment. Although I think The Dark Knight will basically play by the ground rules established in the first film so it would be closer to say the Bourne films rather than re-adaptation from certain comics.
