On the Stands: MAD #476

The latest issue of MAD is in comic shops this week, and on newsstands on Tuesday. It contains my parody of “Entourage”. I’ll post some sneak peeks of that parody, along with some of the pencils and such tomorrow.

One noteworthy tidbit about this issue of MAD. According to Mike Slaubaugh and his MAD Lists website, this issue represents Sergio Aragones’ 400th appearance in the magazine. He has only missed one issue since his first appearance in MAD #76, over 40 years ago! Congratulations or sympathies to Sergio, depending on your point of view. According to Mike’s list, I’ve got only 342 more appearances to go to catch up to him. Don’t hold your breath…

    Tom I’m looking forward to the new Mad. I use it as practice to refine my drawing skills by studying your work. My only problem is the looks I get standing in line at the checkout, being 57 and getting funny looks that a guy this old still reads this stuff

    God, that cover is an absolute RIOT! First laugh-out-loud MAD cover I’ve seen in some time. I know Alfred E. Newman is a “mainstay” of MAD covers, but it’s interesting to see what happens when he’s de-empahsized to the point of being a tiny head shot. I wonder if the art directors are experimenting with some different approaches. I, for one, notice and appreciate the alternate approach. Not to say Alfred should be squeezed out (that’s CRAZY talk), but maybe he doesn’t have to be front and center on every cover. Whattaya think, Tom?

    I also loved this cover. One of the best in recent memory.

    My favorite types of covers are ones with very clever gags like this one. They may or may not feature Alfred prominently, but having a good gag is what makes it for me. If that means Alfred is regulated to a small element like he was here, then I’m all for it if it makes me laugh. A few issues ago they had a Tom Cruise/ Katie Holmes cover with Alfred as the baby and the caption, “What, Me Surry?” I thought that was a very funny cover as well. MAD usually does covers related to interior content, but I’d like to see more covers skewering some hot topic not necessarily part of the issue. The stupid “Rosie vs. Trump” feud is a prime target. WHO CARES???? Sadly a lot of Americans who apparently have little else to occupy their minds.
